Theatre under the Stars

Over the course of three weeks each summer, Hungary’s largest theatre springs up on the bare cobblestones of Szeged’s Dóm Square. Ever since its founding in 1931, the Szeged Open-Air Festival has been the most popular open-air stage in the country. Today, it awaits its audience – 4,000 visitors each evening and 70,000 annually – with a state-of-the-art festival venue of a truly European standard. The 2016 season entertained audiences with epic productions: viewers were enchanted by the galactic visual style of The Flying Dutchman, raved to the pop tunes of Mamma Mia! and adored the Hollywood charm of Singin' in the Rain.

Paul Potts is the superstar of next year’s Open-Air Festival in Szeged
The world-known tenor will sing the role of the Steersman in The Flying Dutchman which is the Dóm Square festival’s opening production in 2016. A few days ago, in London he signed the contract for the role. With 4 studio albums and more than 600 concerts, Potts – who appeared in Britain’s Got Talent in 2007 – is one of the best known singers in the world. More than 141million people have watched his debut in the talent show on Youtube.
The programme for the 2016 Szeged Open-air Festival is set!
The Flying Dutchman, Dracula's Last Dance, Me and my Little Brother, Mamma Mia!, Les Misérables, Singin' in the Rain, Comedy of Errors: these are the productions that the Szeged Open-air Festival has in store for 2016. For the festival's 85th anniversary next summer, some of the bigest hits from recent years will again be staged on Cathedral Square, joined by three new productions. Tickets sales have begun, with no rise in ticket prices.
Katarina Witt discussed her role in Un ballo in Maschera in Berlin

The world-wide known superstar figure skater will step onto stage as the queen of the ball this summer, at Szeged in Verdi's opera. It's an exquisite event, because she only accepted the role for the sake of the Open-Air Festival and the spectacular performance.
